These Are the Scars You Can See

I wonder,

as I scan my photos,

looking for happy moments,

why I keep,

or even take

photos of my injuries.

Ripped open forearms.

Scraped knees and elbows.

Bruises and knots.

They are evidence

of experiences I’ve overcome.

They are proof

that I am

tougher than I seem

and that my life

isn’t as privileged as you think.

They take the place

of abuses and rapes

that scarred mostly my spirit.

They are reminders

of an absentee father,

too many funerals,

and all of the scars

that you can’t see.
