I Am Not the Label You Give Me

I am complex and multifaceted.

I have many titles

and wear many hats.

That’s okay.

I give others permission to be diverse, too.

We all are

more than our job titles,

more than our family roles,

more than our locations,

political parties,

temporary interests,

or furnishings.

We are all of the books we’ve read,

not just the one we are reading.

We are our mothers

and our fathers.

We are the friends we have

and the ones we’ve lost.

We are movies, classes, illnesses, and injuries.

Let’s not pretend to wear

one label

to make it seem easier than it is

to be human.

Let’s just be who we are

with all our complexities

and invite others to join us

on an amazing adventure

of discovery

and acceptance.
