Accept Acknowledgment; Honor Your Honorees
Below is the text of a press release that I have been reluctant to share. I have been afraid of “tooting my own horn” too much. I was a little embarrassed that my name gets lost in the list of awardees. I expected people to judge me harshly like they did when they found out the softball program I played for at the University of Kentucky had not yet been approved by the National College Athletic Association (“NCAA”) or that I was cut first round from the United States Olympic Softball Team. Yet, I didn’t want to dishonor Enterprising Women Magazine. So, I applied the Third Ear Conflict Resolution process and got present to all of the unrelated stories I brought to this simple notice. I realized I wanted to feel a little more special than I did as one person near the end of a very long list of truly prestigious women. Yet making me feel special that wasn’t really a task for the magazine; it had already done a lot by awarding me an Honorable Mention–and by sending a prepared press release for me to share. If I am still not feeling special, this is on me. Isn’t it funny how we could have the very thing we want if we simply took the action we were resisting?!
Yes. I am now sharing this lovely announcement of the extraordinary group of women I will be sharing a couple of days with in early March. Suddenly, I see again who I get to be with–and am considered part of. I do feel special and recognize that I am special–like each of them and each of you. I am creating my future as a truly enterprising woman and invite you to see yourself with us, whether your enterprise is a Fortune 500 company, a small law studio, a closely-held family business, or a closely-held family. When you acknowledge your own greatness, you honor all of those who have helped you become great and who will hold you accountable for staying great.
